Text Box: Diana Bernstein, AAUW member and Director of Wellness at Mennonite Village, will provide Corvallis and Albany AAUW members a light-hearted opportunity to practice the various activities that keep the brain active and stimulated.
According to Dr. Alvaro Fernandez, one of the leading researchers on brain health, “Our brains are composed of different areas and functions, and we can strengthen them through mental exercise - or they will get atrophied for lack of practice. The benefits are both short-term (improved concentration and memory, sustained mental clarity under stressful situations, etc.) and long-term (creation of a “brain reserve” that helps protect us against potential problems such as Alzheimer’s).” Dr. Alvarez continues: “Use it or lose it may be misleading if we think ‘It’ is just one thing. The brain is composed of many different areas that focus on different things. Doing a crossword puzzle only activates a small part of the brain.”
At this Healthy Brain session you will not only have an opportunity to practice skills but also learn about current research that will assist you in pursuing behaviors and activities that boost your brainpower.
